However, due to employee shortages, employers are often forced to adopt this model, and sometimes even allow for exclusively online work. In my opinion, office work has its advantages, much more pros than remote work, both for the employer and the employee. People need physical contact, which provides an opportunity for spontaneous conversations and interactions, leading to new ideas. Psychologically, when the contact between employees is less direct, there can be isolation and a loss of a sense of belonging to the team. Of course, there are situations where hybrid work is beneficial, especially in projects that do not require a constant presence in the office.

What benefits of hybrid work do private entrepreneurs see, if any?

Of course, I also see the benefits of hybrid work. Each model has its pros and cons. For the employer, these include, for example, a smaller need for office space. Many can afford to vacate several hundred square meters of office space today, which also results in savings on rent and electricity. The office maintenance costs are lower. However, during times of employee shortage, the entrepreneur must primarily offer the possibility of choice. Employees definitely prefer it, because we can adjust the working hours to our individual needs. For some employees, this may mean more time spent with family, for others, more flexibility in planning their day. Online work also enables recruiting talents from various locations, regardless of the location, which in a situation of unemployment is a big plus as we can reach out not only to other regions of Poland but also beyond borders. Hybrid work, meanwhile, opens the door to flexibility and allows employees to adjust their schedule according to their life needs. However, I always stress that when some of the team works remotely and some at the office, we need to ensure that everyone feels engaged and well-informed. This requires careful, often even empathetic management of communication, as remote communication is definitely more prone to misunderstandings, even when using remote work tools, such as video conferencing platforms.

What can be done to maintain creativity and discipline in a team working traditionally and remotely?

I personally try to organize regular meetings and creative sessions, which help employees remain engaged and inspired. This is what I advise novice entrepreneurs who ask me for advice. In addition, I support the development of interpersonal and communication skills, which are crucial in team work. Face-to-face meetings and collaboration are still the foundation of our work. However, the key to effectively managing a hybrid team is flexibility and very clear communication. We need to understand the various needs of employees and ensure that everyone has access to the necessary tools and information. Regular online meetings and clear goals and expectations are key. Some companies require online connection throughout the day in order to control the engagement of their team during working hours, but to me this resembles a kind of “bugging” in offices and I do not fully agree with this. I am rather for choosing people for the team who can be trusted. This is already a task for HR professionals, hence in my opinion today’s HR professionals have to be better psychologists than ever before.

Do you see the pros and cons of the hybrid model in the context of balancing work and private life, the trendy “work-life-balance”?

Of course, there are certain aspects of hybrid work that can help maintain a better work-life balance. For some employees, this could mean the ability to spend more time with family and reduce travel to the office. I believe that a balance between work and personal life can be achieved in both hybrid and traditional work, provided there is proper time management and priority setting. In the traditional model I see it in aspects such as: a clear separation of work from personal life, because working in an office sets specific work hours, which facilitates setting boundaries between work time and free time. Physical separation from work duties, because leaving the office you can leave work and focus on personal matters. Office work provides the possibility of direct interaction with colleagues, which can be important for building interpersonal relationships and emotional support.

On managing in the era of 5% unemployment rate and the dispute over the superiority of work models – hybrid over stationary and stationary over hybrid.
