Social care homes are grappling with increasing staffing problems. The drastic differences in wages, sometimes even double, between nurses working in the healthcare system and those in the social care system mean there is a lack of willing employees. Last year, around 6,000 nurses worked in social care homes – now there are fewer than 4,000. “We are facing a catastrophe in terms of employment in the social care system in the coming years,” warns Mariola \u0141odzi\u0144ska, president of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The main problem facing directors of social care homes at this time is the provision of nursing staff. This is, of course, about salaries and the disparity between the salaries of nurses who work in healthcare entities and the salaries of nurses employed in social care homes,” Mariola \u0141odzi\u0144ska tells in an interview with Newseria Biznes agency.<\/p>\n

The salaries of nurses employed in health centres or hospitals are funded by the National Health Fund. Social care homes are not healthcare institutions, but social assistance organizational units, meaning they cannot be funded by the NHS. The conditions for remuneration of employees of budgetary units are regulated by an executive order to the law on municipal employees.<\/p>\n

There had been works on granting social care homes the status of a medical entity, but stuck in the consultation stage. It turned out that only some of the social care home residents could be covered under a contract with the NHS, so resources for pay raises would have to come from other sources than the NHS. As a result, nurses employed in the social care system miss out on raises, while it becomes harder for homes to find medical staff.<\/p>\n

Mariola \u0141odzi\u0144ska recalls that the Ministry of Family and Social Policy had tried to create a possibility for social care homes to contract services with the National Health Fund, but in the end, this plan was abandoned.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Health states that in recent years, the average salary of nurses in medical entities has doubled, and among those with a master’s degree and specialization, it has gone up by over 170%. From July 2023, nurses with a bachelor’s degree will earn close to PLN 6000 gross per month (an increase of around PLN 640), while those with higher education and specialization will earn over PLN 8100 (an increase of over PLN 880). Nurses in social care homes cannot expect such salaries.<\/p>\n

Mariola \u0141odzi\u0144ska believes the status quo will persist in the near future, especially considering the increasing number of seniors in Poland, and thereby the increase in the number of dependent people needing help.<\/p>\n

Mariola \u0141odzi\u0144ska warns of a disaster in the social care system in the coming years. “Nurses currently working in social care homes will work until retirement, but the younger ones decide to reorganize their professional lives and take up work in healthcare entities. This is an aspect we should pay attention to in the next term of parliament, as the elections are just around the corner. For me, this is a priority to regulate these matters,” she concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
