43% of Poles are open to purchasing a used electric vehicle. An even greater confidence in used electric vehicles is shown by those who know someone who already uses an EV – in this group, as many as 61% of people would decide to buy a several-year-old zero-emission car. This data comes from a study carried out in August by Minds & Roses. However, supply is lacking – used electric cars represent less than 1% of all used car offers listed on OTOMOTO. The number of people viewing these ads is increasing each year.

At the Congress of New Mobility 2023, OTOMOTO is presenting a report “The Future of the Used Electric Car Market in Poland”, which combines data from the platform with studies conducted this year for the platform by the research agency Minds & Roses.

More and more electric cars

By end of July, more than 47 thousand zero-emission cars had been registered in Poland, an increase of 58% compared to the previous year. A similar growth trend is seen in car supply – on OTOMOTO until the end of July 2023, there were 110% more used car sale offers and 70% more new electric cars compared to the same period in 2022. This increase, however, must be interpreted in the context of a still relatively low volume of cars offered to drivers in Poland.

Although most electric cars registered in Poland are new, a significant group of drivers declares that they bought their electric vehicles second hand. Minds and Roses conducted a survey at EV Experience in May 2023, as part of an electric mobility event organized by PSPA, revealing that one-third of electric vehicle owners present at the event purchased their car on the secondary market.

Used better because… cheaper

The purchase price of an electric car is a key factor – both among enthusiasts and those skeptical about the purchase. According to M&R’s August study, those willing to purchase an electric car are interested in a used vehicle precisely because of its lower price (38%). Conversely, 58% of those who reject the possibility of purchasing a BEV say that the main reason is the high price of the car.

Currently, on OTOMOTO taking into account all segments – including premium cars, the average price of a new car exceeds 300 thousand zlotys. This is more than the maximum price of a new electric car, for which you can apply for a rebate from the “My Electric” program. However, rebates are not available to those who decide to buy a used electric car, even though the price is significantly lower compared to new ones. When deciding to buy an electric car – Even on the secondary market, one must be prepared for high costs, purchasing a used electric car through OTOMOTO averages around 178 thousand zlotys.

“Inclusive” top 10 used electric cars on OTOMOTO

The top ten most frequently viewed used electric cars on OTOMOTO include vehicles from various segments. The most often viewed car is the Tesla 3, closely followed by the more affordable Nissan Leaf. Among the first ten most popular cars among platform users, one can find both small cars – like the BMW i3 or Renault Zoe, and those in the premium segment such as the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron.

The supply of electric car models largely matches interest – 7 cars from the compilations of “most often displayed” and “most often listed” on OTOMOTO appear on both top lists.

Increasing group of experienced

The number of people who know someone driving an electric car is growing. In a study by M&R last year, only 24% declared to directly know an EV driver. This figure has now risen to 29%, which means that almost one third of Poles can ask their acquaintances about the practical aspects of using an electric vehicle. The most troubling issues include battery durability (27%), the distance that can be covered on a single charge (27%), the cost of maintaining a car annually (24%) and common faults (25%).

Current EV drivers largely contribute to creating a positive image of electric cars. In a survey conducted during the EV Experience event, as many as 99% of EV owners confirmed their satisfaction with their electric cars, and 83% said their next automotive choice would be another BEV. As it stands, electric cars are not the sole means of transport in most households (69%). Electric vehicle owners particularly appreciate the lower operating costs and the privileges of moving around the city with a green registration plate.
