Loans for Micro-Entrepreneurs in August 2023: Increase in Number and Value

In August 2023, compared to August 2022, banks granted more loans to microenterprises (+15.7%) and for higher amounts (+15.7%).

Sale of Loans to Microenterprises by Credit Product

From a product perspective, banks granted more revolving credits (+34.2%) and investment loans (+18.9%), but fewer overdraft loans were granted (-10.7%). In terms of value, positive dynamics were noted in the case of revolving credits (+23.2%) and investment loans (+17.7%). A decrease, however, occurred in credits in current accounts (-1.7%).

Between January and August 2023, compared to the same period last year, banks granted more (+11.0%) credits to microenterprises and for a higher amount (+5.6%). In this period, banks granted fewer (-13.3%) and lower value (-21.0%) investment loans. Increases in the number and value aspect apply to revolving credits: respectively (+15.1%) and (+8.0%), as well as loans in current accounts (+1.5%) and (+6.6%).

Quality of Loan Portfolios for Microenterprises by Credit Product

The August 2023 reading of the Micro-business Loan Quality Index was 6.09% in value terms. It still remains fairly safe. The Product Quality Indices in August 2023 were as follows in value terms: investment loans 2.95%, overdraft loans 4.37%, and revolving loans 11.31%. Compared to July 2023, the overall Quality Index improved (decreased) (-0.44). Over a 12-month period, compared to August 2022, the overall Quality Index worsened (increased) (+1.14). Over the 12-month period all three types of loan indices also worsened (increased). The biggest deterioration of the index occurred in the case of revolving loans (+2.34) and overdraft loans (+0.78).

Sale of Loans to Microenterprises by Sector

Of the 12.2 thousand credits granted to microenterprises in August, 5.9 thousand were incurred by service companies (48.3%) and 2.8 thousand by trading companies (22.7%). These two sectors account for 71% of the total loans granted in August 2023. Of the total amount of PLN 1.643 billion, banks granted PLN 608 million (37.0%) in credits to companies in the services sector and PLN 427 million (26.0%) to microenterprises engaged in trading activity. These two sectors accounted for 63.0% of the total value of loans granted to microenterprises in August 2023.

In August 2023, the highest year-on-year increase in the number of loans granted pertained to the construction (+18.8%) and services (+17.7%) industries. In value terms, positive dynamics in August 2023 compared to August 2022 were related to loans for companies from all industries. The highest dynamics were recorded for loans granted to construction (+33.6%) and service companies (+19.2%).

In the first eight months of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, positive dynamics in numerical terms concerned loans granted to companies from all four sectors. The highest dynamics were observed in service companies (+12.2%) and construction companies (+11.7%). In value terms, during this period, banks granted (+14.5%) a higher amount of loans to construction companies and (+6.1%) to service companies. The negative dynamics were characterized by loans granted to manufacturing companies (-0.8%).

Quality of Loan Portfolios for Microenterprises by Industry

According to the Quality Index readings, the worst (highest index level) loans were repaid in August 2023 by service companies – the Index value reached 6.37%, trading companies (6.03%), and manufacturing companies (5.98%). The best (lowest) reading in August was recorded by the Quality Index of companies from the construction sector, reaching 5.87%. Compared to August 2022, the Index worsened (increased) in all industries. The most significant ones were in services (+1.36) and construction (+1.32).
